i2 Summit Mission Statement
i2 Summit is a meeting for all interventional cardiologists. It delivers current, high-quality and cutting edge interventional science through innovative methods, taking interventionalists and cardiac care team members to the next level of practice.
i2 Summit Statement of Need
Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in the United States. It is reported that more than 81 million Americans have one or more forms of cardiovascular disease and more than 870,000 Americans die of cardiovascular disease of both the heart and the vascular blood system each year. Members of the healthcare team have been providing care for patients with cardiovascular health needs in a wide variety of environments affecting the lives of countless patients and families. As the overall care of the patient with cardiovascular disease is becoming more complex, it is imperative that the cardiovascular professional remain current on the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.
The American College of Cardiology is committed to fill educational gaps in knowledge, skill and competence in general cardiology for the entire healthcare team. The translation of clinical science to their bedside clinical practices for the healthcare provider in cardiology is critical. Developing needs- and evidence-based general cardiology programs that incorporate rigorous science with clinically relevant strategies is the College’s fundamental core competency and its greatest strength.
This program will offer needs-based educational programming including the comprehensive review of current established practice patterns as well as state-of-the art updates and techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease in areas such as women’s health, valvular disease, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, pulmonary hypertension, STEMI, and co-morbidities.
i2 Summit Program Goals
Two global goals for the i2 Summit communicate a commitment to provide needs-based education that is independent of commercial interests and fosters changes in target audience knowledge, competence and performance to ultimately improve patient outcomes.
- KNOWLEDGE — to disseminate knowledge of interventional concepts and technologies to optimize cardiovascular care and improve of cardiovascular patient outcomes.
Educational strategies for attaining this goal within specific topic categories* are:
- Offer a core curriculum for interventional cardiovascular education in treating patients with coronary, carotid/peripheral vascular and structural heart disease
- Provide a forum for analyzing and critiquing new approaches to non-surgical management of patients with cardiovascular disease
- Present basic and clinical research findings, independent of commercial interests, to increase the evidence base related to the care of patients with cardiovascular disease
- Create opportunities for knowledge exchange between interventionalists and general cardiologists as well as cross-discipline areas of cardiology (e.g., cardiovascular surgeons)
- COMPETENCE — to foster the translation of evidence-based interventional concepts and techniques into daily clinical practice.
Educational strategies for attaining this goal within specific topic categories* are:
- Offer education towards satisfying requirements for maintenance of certification (MOC) in interventional cardiovascular medicine
- Provide individualized training on clinical diagnostics and procedures, presented in hands-on formats
- Promote professional exchanges between and within groups of interventional cardiovascular care providers with similar clinical, geographic and/or educational interests
- Present best practices of interventional cardiovascular specialists and related health care professionals working in multidisciplinary teams
- Create a forum for global collaboration and cooperation on issues in interventional cardiovascular medicine to improve professional practices worldwide
* Topic categories for 2009 are: General Interventional Cardiology; Endovascular Therapies; Structural Heart Disease Interventions; Imaging and Interventional Cardiology; Coronary Interventional Cardiology; Interventional Cardiac Care Team; and Clinical Skills/Certification Maintenance.
Target Audience
i2 Summit is intended for interventional cardiologists and radiologists, general cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons, vascular specialists, scientists and clinical trialists. While much of the program content is specially geared to the worldwide community of interventional physicians and scientists, other health care professional including medical students and trainees, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and technicians will also benefit from the depth and diversity of the program.
