Len Nichols, Ph.D., to Present Bishop Lecture

Noted health care economist Len Nichols,

Nichols

Ph.D., will present the 48th Annual Louis F. Bishop lecture during ACC.09. The lecture takes place from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, in Room W311A.
Nichols is director of the Health Policy Program at the New America Foundation, which aims to expand health insurance coverage to all Americans while lowering costs and improving efficiency.

Many attendees may recognize Nichols from his keynote presentation at the 2009 ACC Health System Reform Summit. During that event, he shared ways in which the new administration and Congress can offer the private sector incentives to provide affordable, quality health care. According to Nichols, the current health care system’s incentive structure is “deeply flawed” — and some profit from the flawed structure. He noted that behavioral choices affect health and health costs and that the system cannot afford “business as usual” trajectories. During the Bishop lecture, he will present “What Health Care Reform Will Cost Us: And Why Doing Nothing Will Cost Us Even More.”

A panel of four ACC presidents and ACC CEO Jack Lewin, M.D., will discuss health care reform following Nichols’ presentation. Fred Bove, M.D., F.A.C.C., president-elect; Jim Dove, M.D., M.A.C.C., immediate-past president; Tim Garson, M.D., M.A.C.C., past president; and ACC President Doug Weaver, M.D., F.A.C.C., will react to Nichols’ speech and discuss the ACC’s role in health care reform.

Don’t miss the quality track at ACC.09! The

Quality First Logo
quality track provides a great opportunity to hear about ACC quality efforts already underway, as well as learn about innovative ways to improve quality of care and empower patients.

ACC’s quality efforts are represented by Quality First, the College’s health care reform campaign. Through Quality First, the ACC is taking a leading role in health care reform efforts by engaging patients, lawmakers, payers and others around a new standard of health care delivery focused on increasing the quality of care and ensuring greater patient value. Learn more at qualityfirst.acc.org. Also, look for the Quality First survey in your portfolio bag. Turn in your completed survey at ACC Central (Booth #2062) for a free gift! Specific sessions under the quality track can be found through the online Program Planner.

On Sunday, plan to attend the ACC.09 Scientific Showcase in the Orange County Convention Center, Hall A2, from 8 – 9:30 a.m. The quality-themed event features the Simon Dack Lecture by Princeton University economics professor Uwe Reinhardt; presidential address by ACC President Douglas Weaver, M.D., F.A.C.C.; and a JUPITER trial panel discussion. Later on Sunday, attend the Louis F. Bishop Lecture, featuring health care economist Len Nichols, Ph.D. The lecture will take place from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Room W311A. See above for more details.
