We may exist in an era dominated by instant electronic communications and the Internet, but hearing about data and clinical results quickly doesn’t mean we instantly know how the information applies to our clinical practices. This year at ACC.09 and Innovation in Intervention: i2 Summit 2009 (i2.09), providing the bench-to-bedside connection is one of our two major goals. Our other goal is to disseminate knowledge related to optimal cardiovascular (CV) care, disease prevention and improvement in patient outcomes.

However, these goals tell only a small part of what will make ACC.09 and i2.09 valuable for all CV professionals. At every planning step, we have focused on building a program that meets attendees’ lifelong learning needs and that does so by using a wide range of learning resources and formats designed to suit every learning style. We believe the education framework of ACC.09 and i2.09 will provide all attendees with what they need to provide the best quality of care for patients and plan for their own professional futures.

For i2.09, the American College of Cardiology Foundation (ACCF), with its long history of commitment to education and training, is partnering with the Cardiovascular Research Foundation to take advantage of CRF’s history of showcasing new approaches and putting new data in perspective. This new partnership combines the unique talents of each organization and capitalizes fully on their strengths.
Starting Saturday, March 28, i2 Summit will offer a full array of cutting-edge research, live cases from around the world and in-depth symposia for interventional cardiologists. This year you’ll find a new emphasis on the integration of general and interventional cardiology, and synchronized scheduling will make it easier than ever to move within and between i2.09 and ACC.09 sessions. Also, i2.09 will feature an entire educational track tailored to the interests of general cardiologists, available to Full-Access and i2 Summit registrants.
Maseri-Florio International Lecture Awardee Chosen
 Schenck-Gustaffson |
Karin Schenck-Gustaffson, M.D., Ph.D., F.E.S.C., a global leader in cardiology and gender medicine, will present the Maseri-Florio International Lecture at ACC.09. A professor of cardiology at the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden, she is also director and founder of the Research Centre for Gender Medicine there. Her selection as the Maseri-Florio lecturer honors her more than 30 years of work in a wide array of cardiovascular research areas, particularly in women and heart disease. She was the guiding force for the establishment of the Research Centre for Gender Medicine at the Karolinska Institutet in 2001, the first in the world. Her work in that field has helped to identify important sex and gender differences and has led to improved cardiovascular care for both women and men. The International Lecture takes place Monday, March 30, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday’s schedule also features the ACC joint symposia with cardiovascular societies from other nations — societies that span the globe from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.
FIT Forum Includes Valentine, Harrington, Fuster
At this year’s FIT forum, C. Michael Valentine, M.D., F.A.C.C., past chair of the ACC Board of Governors and member of the ACC Board of Trustees, will offer his perspectives on various cardiology career options. An interventional cardiologist with Cardiovascular Associates of Central Virginia, Lynchburg, Va., he has also served as co-chair of the Advocacy Committee and helped to develop the ACC’s Cardiac Cath Lab Toolkit. Other speakers include Valentin Fuster, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.C., Robert Harrington, M.D., F.A.C.C., and William Miles, M.D., F.A.C.C. This session always provides a wonderful opportunity to meet and ask questions of some of the profession’s leading members. The FIT Forum takes place Monday, March 30, noon to 2 p.m., and features free lunches to the first 150 attendees. Earn MOC points at ACC.09, i2.09
For the first time, attendees will be able to obtain American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) points as part of the Annual Scientific Session. There will be special study sessions at both ACC.09 and i2.09 on MOC, “ABIM Recertification Made Easy.” The courses being offered, which are the 2007 and 2008 updates for general cardiology and interventional cardiology, will be repeated from Saturday through Tuesday for a total of eight sessions. Attendees must pre-register by signing up at the same time they register for the Annual Scientific Session, but there will be no additional fees to attend. Attendees must be enrolled in the ABIM’s MOC program to attend the study sessions. Each study session will be worth 10 points towards the ABIM MOC program. Sign up soon as space is limited.
